The story of ''Thumbelina'' starts with a woman who wants a child. She does not know where to find one, so she goes to a witch who gives her a seed. The woman plants the seed, and a tulip sprouts. She kisses the tulip, and it opens up, presenting a small girl inside named Thumbelina, or Tiny.

The woman gives her a walnut shell for a bed, violet petals for a mattress, and a rose petal as eiderdown. She fills a soup-plate with water, and Thumbelina floats on a tulip petal.
